Yesterday was probably the first time in recent memory that I stepped outside midday and could feel the slight chill in the air.
I can’t decide how I feel about it.
I look a thousand percent more awesome in fall clothing than I do in summer wear. I can stop worrying about sweating out my makeup. And, I love the colors and even the activities (pumpkin patches are so my jam) of this season so much.
It’s just that WINTER.
That is a thing I abhor from the depths of my being. I blame it on getting a good weather start to life by being a Californian. And on good sense. Because humanity just does better in 70 degree temps.
The only good thing I’ve discovered about real winter is the potential for a snow day as a way to get out of getting up early and having to actually go outside in the coldness for the sake of meeting responsibilities. Other than that, I am totally fine with never ever in life seeing another white Christmas. Unless you mean a white sand Christmas due to the fact that I am enjoying it on a tropical beach location. Those people like Christ and Santa too.
But fall, fall is wonderful!
It’s cool, but not cold. There may be wetness, but usually not too much. And cute clothing and shoes are EVERYWHERE!
Warm scarves, light jackets, corduroys, patterned leggings, oversized sweaters, plaid shirts.
Yep, plaid shirts, making a comeback.
But instead of the baggy, grungy looks you may recall tying around your waist and pairing with combat boots, torn jeans, and regrettably dark lipstick in 1992, the grown up lady version of the plaid shirts are more feminine and mom-life appropriate thanks to their slimmer cuts and softer material.
Sure, you can go ahead and bring back elements of the 90s version if you want to (or if you are 19 and single), but I’m not thinking that look is not going to win you any points with the PTA peeps when you roll through the car rider line blasting your Nirvana (even though, I know, I know, Come As You Are is sort of your anthem) and your kids? Well, expect them to hate you.
Instead, tone it down and then dress it up with some sensible elements and it is a fun and interesting way to instantly add color and layer for freezey days to your look…
I snagged this shirt for under $20 at TJ Maxx. It’s perfect for layering and is a great addition to my casual outfit arsenal. Plus, when things really start to get real, these skinny cords are happy shoved into boots and paired with my leather biker jacket for even more layering, fall weather awesome.
